Our mission is to share butterflies and the tropical rainforest with the next generation. We use the lovable and relatable bug to set the stage for discussion about tropical rainforest ecology. Come learn about the importance to conserve, restore, and protect the system as a whole rainforest.
ABOUT THE BUTTERFLY HABITAT
THE BUTTERFLY ENCLOSURE IS A HUGE SPACE SPANNING 25×35 meterS. visitors can climb three hand-carved treehouse platforms inside the inclosure to view butterflies form above and identify them with posted field guides. Each platform REPRESENTS A LAYER OF THE canopy from pioneer to secondary to primary forest. DIFFERENT BUTTERFLIES LIVE AT DIFFERENT HEIGHTS OF THE CANOPY, so the structures WILL GIVE visitor an opportunity to encounter species that are difficult to view from the forest floor. get a behind-the-scenes look at butterfly farm operations, and see all stages of the butterfly life cycle. The tours are also AN excellent settings for photographers to capture rarely seen and difficult to photograph subjects.
ABOUT THE BOTANICAL GARDENS
Inside the butterfly habitat and around the picnic tables, classroom, and tropical rainforest trails, visitors will find an extensive collection of PLANTS including heliconias, passifloras, orchids, medicinal plants, and many familiar tropical fruit favorites. our active permaculture farm features banana, cacao, pineapple, papaya, and much more. These productive and healthy plants offer habitat and food sources that attract daily visits by butterflies, macaws, toucans, monkeys, and other wildlife. OSA INTERACTIVE GARDENS IS a biological corridor in the Osa Peninsula (one of the most biodiverse places on Earth). Over 150 bird species have been recorded on OUR site and FOUR species of monkeys PASS REGULARLY.

O.I.G. is a private organization, but it is likely that you can receive credit through your university by way of “independent research”. You should arrange an independent study with your professor or advisor prior to arriving in Costa Rica. Your O.I.G. student coordinator has PhD credentials in biological studies and can provide an academic transcript to your professor or advisor. Generally, students receive 2-3 credits for a 2-4 week tenure.
